On behalf of the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, I extend our condolences to Cpl. Platts family, the West Texas A & M University Police Department, and the campus community at large. The West Texas A & M University Police Department is an IACLEA member, and Chief Shawn Burns a longtime Association member.
Cpl. Platts death is a sobering reminder that even seemingly routine calls can have hidden dangers. Campus public safety officers are trained and prepared to safeguard the people and communities they swore to protectno matter how great the risk. Every day, like their municipal and federal law enforcement counterparts, campus public safety officers put on their uniforms, report for duty, and are prepared to run to danger. Sometimes, they make the ultimate sacrifice in doing so. Rest in peace, Cpl. Platt.
43 campus public safety officers were killed in the line of duty between 1923 and 2016. Watch IACLEAs tribute video to them here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6CeynI_OYo
