Statement of IACLEA President Priscilla Stevens

Hurricane Katrina
September 2, 2005

“Many members of the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA) have expressed their sympathies to the victims and their support for relief efforts to help those affected by the tremendous devastation that hit the Gulf Coast region this week from Hurricane Katrina.

Our overriding concern is for the safety, health, and well-being of all people affected by these devastating events. We urge all citizens to support the relief efforts being undertaken to address the serious problems in Alabama , Louisiana , and Mississippi . We also encourage all citizens to cooperate with law enforcement authorities as they attempt to restore some semblance of order to New Orleans .

We are heartened by the outpouring of support, not only from IACLEA members, but from the higher education community in general. Higher education institutions across the country have opened their doors to students in their area who have been dislocated from colleges and universities in New Orleans . We have seen reports of higher education institutions organizing efforts to collect donations for hurricane victims at upcoming major athletic events. Others are trying to accommodate displaced faculty and graduate students until colleges and universities in New Orleans can be reopened.

These responses to this horrible event demonstrate a level of caring and compassion that we as a nation have shown in times of crises, and are a further manifestation of our shared commitment to help others in times of need.”

IACLEA will continue to monitor developments in the affected region. If you would like to make a donation to the relief effort, please visit: www.redcross.org . The American Red Cross has also posted an article about donating to the hurricane relief effort, which can be found at: http://www.redcross.org/article/0,1072,0_312_4498,00.html
