Fatal Shooting at Delta State University
Sep 09, 2015
IACLEA Statement - By William Taylor, President
Yesterday, we sadly witnessed another fatal shooting on a U.S. campus. On behalf of the 1,100 institutions and more than 1,800 individual members who comprise the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, Inc. (IACLEA), we extend our deepest sympathies and support to the university community at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi.
This shooting is a stark reminder of the challenges campus public safety officers face each day. While campus shootings are rare, we have seen a number of multiple homicides at colleges and universities in recent years. IACLEA and the campus public safety profession must continue to work at providing training to officers to prevent and prepare for such incidents.
According to U.S. Department of Justice statistics, a majority of campus public safety agencies reported they were participating in active shooter training during the 2011-2012 year. This training was usually in the form of workshops, seminars, and lectures, and typically involved the use of mock exercises and scenarios. IACLEA has also offered Active Shooter workshops at its Annual Conference.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Delta State University community as they go through this difficult time.
