Immigration Status Enforcement on Campuses

A Message From IACLEA President Randy Burba
As president of the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, I am proud to represent the world's largest group of campus public safety professionals. These men and women, and the organizations they serve, remain dedicated to the foundational mission of preserving the personal safety and dignity of every person in our colleges and universities, without concern for that individual's heritage, ethnicity, or religion. IACLEA understands that the nations national security must prioritize the preservation of safety and security of our homes, schools, and communities. As the federal government issues new orders toward the goal of enhancing national security, law enforcement leaders across the United States and from around the globe must have clear guidance in order to respond to the many questions our community members and our administrators are asking about enforcement on campus.
We at IACLEA will continue to monitor changes in immigration policy, including reports that the White House may seek to direct state and local law enforcement agencies to participate in the apprehension and removal of undocumented persons who are currently in the United States. It is important to understand that as of this writing, the Executive Order ("Enhancing Public Safety in the Interior of the United State") issued on January 25th specifically directs the Secretary of Homeland Security to use the existing authority under Section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. This is consistent with previous administrations, as state and local agencies remain subject only to voluntary agreements, without an obligation to perform mandatory immigration enforcement duties.
IACLEA's mission is to serve its campus communities and protect our students, staff, and faculty of every heritage, ethnicity, religion, and country while they are on our campuses. It is also to support and protect members of our campus communities so that they may pursue their academic programs and research as global citizens who work to find discoveries to aid humanity.
