New IACLEA Director of Professional Services Starts August 20

Gerard R. “Jerry” Murphy joined the IACLEA staff August 20, at the Association’s headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, as the director of professional services. He will manage IACLEA’s Accreditation and Peer Review Program (PReP, formerly LEMAP), as well as the emerging consulting services.

“I am confident that Jerry’s extensive and diverse qualifications will yield benefits for IACLEA’s unique member services—Accreditation, the Peer Review Program, and our growing consulting services,” said IACLEA Executive Director Sue Riseling.

Highlights from Murphy’s extensive career: While at the Police Executive Research Forum, he participated in drafting the original standards and developing the initial on-site assessment process for the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). He was the Accreditation Manager for the Baltimore County Maryland Police Department, and he served as a commissioner for the Emergency Management Accreditation Program (EMAP). Additionally, Murphy has authored dozens of law enforcement papers and managed national research projects on community policing, immigration, homeland security, and terrorism.

“I know that Jerry will provide the same exceptional service and engaged collaboration with IACLEA members and other constituents that Jack Leonard provided during his 14 years of outstanding service to the Association,” said Riseling. “If he does so with even half the understated wit that Jack deploys, agency representatives will have both a productive and enjoyable engagement with IACLEA. We wished new grandfather Jack a fond farewell at the end of the August.”

IACLEA expects all Accreditation applications and assessments, as well as PReP reviews, to continue as scheduled. Murphy assumed all program duties (e.g., scheduling assessments, receiving and providing documentation, answering questions, and clarifying issues) and began serving as the primary contact beginning August 20, during his orientation with Jack. On that day, his email address became operational: jmurphy@iaclea.org. He assumed Jack’s phone number then, too: 202-618-4545.

The Association looks forward to serving both member and non-member agencies with continued professionalism.

NOTE: Jerry Murphy is now the direct point of contact for all Accreditation, PReP, and consulting matters.
