Jan 06, 2021
Dear IACLEA Members.
As Law Enforcement Appreciation Day 2021 approaches (January 9), I would like to begin this annual day of recognition by stating my admiration for the work that you do daily, no matter the circumstances. I extend thanks to all agency personnel at every rank and role, at every member agency (police, public safety, and security departments).
When we chose this career, we knew not to expect “ordinary” days and that rapid adaptation was an essential skill. But perhaps only on September 11, 2001, was our adaptability and resilience tested as it was in 2020. As emergency response plans were deployed, you adapted to the ever-changing situation on your campuses, taking steps to protect your personnel, respond to student needs, safeguard the campus property, and, in some cases, assume pandemic-related public health duties including, contact tracing.
I was both impressed and proud to witness the professionalism and can-do approach that placed campus police and public safety agencies as the bedrock of our campus communities during 2020…and into this new year. This is especially significant as the COVID-19 challenge emerged simultaneously with the most serious examination and critique of our profession in more than a generation.
Through all of this, your professionalism was unwavering, your commitment undeterred, and your collaboration unyielding.
Many in your communities will recognize your exemplary efforts this weekend with visits, posters, treats, and other gestures. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I offer our appreciation for the duties you perform during extraordinary times, and on the rare “ordinary” day. I extend additional thanks to the many IACLEA members who have contributed to a plentiful array of relevant programs related to the dual challenges we face. Your generous sharing of knowledge is the core of what makes our Association relevant and has assisted many members across the miles.
With deep gratitude and wishes for a safe and productive year.
