Statement from President Dean:
Dear IACLEA members,
I hope this message finds you in good health and spirits, though today we come together under somber circumstances. It is with a heavy heart that I write to address the recent incident at Baltimore's Morgan State University, where five individuals, four of whom were students, were shot on Tuesday night. While the victims thankfully sustained non-life-threatening injuries, this incident has shaken the campus community and emphasized the importance of our roles in ensuring campus safety worldwide.
The shooting occurred within the vicinity of the Murphy Fine Arts Center and Thurgood Marshall Hall, two places that should be safe havens for education and creativity. The trauma and fear experienced by the students, faculty, staff, and visitors present that night are difficult to fathom. We must acknowledge the immense courage displayed by Morgan State University students who faced this terrifying situation far away from the comfort of their homes.
As leaders in campus law enforcement and public safety, our primary duty is to protect and serve our academic communities. Incidents like this remind us of the ever-present need to be vigilant, proactive, and compassionate in our roles. Our hearts go out to the victims and their families, and we stand in unity with the Morgan State University Police Department and community as they navigate the aftermath of this tragedy.
The quick and coordinated response by campus and local law enforcement, including the Baltimore Police Department, is commendable. It is a testament to the importance of the partnerships we forge with local, state, and federal authorities to ensure the safety of our campuses. While the immediate threat has subsided, we understand that the impact of such an event extends beyond the moment, and our work in providing support and reassurance to our students and colleagues must continue.
At this time, a suspect has not yet been identified, and investigations are ongoing. We must rely on the expertise and dedication of law enforcement agencies to bring those responsible to justice. At the same time, we focus on fostering a sense of security and healing within our community.
Let us use this moment to reaffirm our commitment to the safety of our campuses, our dedication to preventing such incidents, and our support for the victims and their loved ones. Together, we can ensure that Morgan State University and all educational institutions worldwide remain sanctuaries for learning, growth, and unity.
In the days and weeks ahead, please keep the Morgan State University community in your thoughts and prayers. IACLEA will offer assistance, resources, and support to Morgan State University Police. Let us continue to stand together, learn from this experience, and work tirelessly to create safer environments for all.
Thank you for your unwavering dedication to our mission.
