The Leading Authority For Campus Public Safety

Capitol Hill Day 2014

Capitol Hill Day 2014

The seventh annual Capitol Hill Day was held on March 27, 2014 in Washington D.C. Approximately 20 members met with members of Congress to discuss issues of significance to campus public safety agencies.  Emphasis this year included: securing ongoing funding for research and program development for the National Center for Campus Public Safety, securing federal death benefit eligibility for sworn officers killed in the line of duty at private institutions of higher education, as well as regulatory reform in higher education.  Thank you to everyone who participated.  See event highlights below, and visit the IACLEA Government Relations page for the latest updates.

President Weaver and President-Elect David Perry presented the 2014 Congressional Champion Award to U.S. Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island for his sponsorship of legislation to provide equity in death benefits to the families of sworn officers from private institutions who are killed in the line of duty. Butler University's Ben Hunter and MIT's Jay Perault were on hand for the award presentation. Both institutions lost an officer who was killed in the line of duty.

Additionally, Andrew LaCasse, counsel to Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, presented a briefing to IACLEA members regarding a new bipartisan U.S. Senate task force on regulatory reform in higher education. The task force has identified campus public safety as a major topic area for regulatory reform and the Senator is interested in specific examples of federal regulations that are burdensome, costly and duplicative

Members attended more than 60 meetings with Members of Congress and Congressional staff members to educate lawmakers about the importance of campus public safety and IACLEA's legislative agenda.
