Summary

Michigan Medicine Security is a full-service, 24-hour public safety department that works to meet the unique needs of Michigan Medicine. We are widely acknowledged as a healthcare security leader in patient and family-centered care. In fact, the International Association of Healthcare Security and Safety twice has awarded Michigan Medicine Security the Lindberg Bell Award for demonstrated excellence. Our officers and support staff are highly trained healthcare security professionals equipped to serve all members of our community.

Departments are a seven (7) day per week, twenty-four (24) hour per day operation. Work schedules may include nights, weekends, afternoons, holidays and occasional unanticipated overtime. This is a uniformed position required to maintain standards of appearance by following the DPSS uniformed personnel dress code.

MICHIGAN MEDICINE HOSPITAL SECURITY OFFICER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Officers protect the assets and property of the University, ensure public safety and act as the primary liaison with state and local police, fire and security agencies, and represent the University of Michigan
  • Provide superior security and customer service
  • Interact with staff, patients and visitors in a wide variety of circumstances
  • De-escalate potentially violent and non-violent situations
  • Work with medical staff to control violent patient behavior
  • Patrol the medical center and off site health system buildings
  • Prepare incident and security reports
  • Offer a multitude of services to their customers including but not limited to: escorts, wayfinding, unlocks, motorists assists, well-being checks, and funds transports
  • Monitor fire, infant protection, security, and access control alarm systems
  • Control patient and lost and found property
  • Maintain confidentiality in police and/or security matters
  • Provide traffic and crowd control for special events and University sponsored activities

Required Qualifications*

  • Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary
  • Some prior security related experience is necessary
  • Knowledge and/or experience of enforcement of fire, safety and security
  • Must be able to assist emergency response personnel with maneuvering persons who may be combative, intoxicated, or unconscious; may be required to restrain someone with or without assistance
  • As matter of routine, officers must be able to effectively communicate and interact with diverse populations
  • Officers must be able to observe/detect/ identify individuals, safety hazards, and criminal elements within their patrol areas
  • Act calmly and authoritatively in emergency situation; utilize emergency equipment such as fire extinguishers, etc. and perform life saving techniques such as CPR and First Aid
  • The position requires stationary and mobile patrol duties for a minimum of 8 hours per shift.
  • Security personnel are regularly required to ascend and descend multiple flights of stairs as part of their routine patrol, and move departmental equipment such as barricades and fire extinguishers from one location to another
  • The candidate must have working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and must possess basic keyboarding skills

Desired Qualifications*

  • A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is desired
  • Previous experience working in a university and/or healthcare setting is desirable

Additional Information

  • All members of the Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) are considered Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) under The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.
  • As such, you are required to report Clery reportable offenses that come to your attention. DPSS employees are required to complete Clery Compliance Training within the first 14 days of employment and annually thereafter.
