Job Summary

Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) is actively seeking a Standards and Training Captain to join its Public Safety Department. This inaugural position provides an exciting opportunity for an experienced campus safety law enforcement professional to facilitate the department accreditation process, research and implement department wide training initiatives and coordinate community education programs in line with RISD’s SEI goals.  While note required, we welcome candidates who hold an EMS license and prior-related experience .

The successful candidate will demonstrate cultural competence with an understanding of inclusion and diversity issues in the workplace, as well as the knowledge and skill to engage across a wide variety of individual differences and identities through meaningful interactions characterized by respect, mutual understanding, and reciprocity. The candidate should have a strong understanding of and appreciation for processes connected with department accreditation, compliance and outreach.  Strong writing ability, familiarity with training software such as PowerDMS, report database software, Microsoft excel and other database programs.  Experience with developing and implementing document, report and tracking systems.  Strong ability to research and write policies and other administrative reports.  Experience with teaching staff and community members, mentoring staff to create a  cohesive team with promotional pathways.


The Standards and Training Captain will bring their skills and expertise to RISD to direct, coordinate, and facilitate administrative and logistical aspects of department accreditation process, Clery Act compliance, and other required disclosures, as well as training, community education and outreach programs, and internal affairs investigations, in ways that align with institutional goals, objectives, and initiatives related to social equity and inclusion and other priorities. They assume responsibility and command of the department as assigned in the absence of the Director, as directed. Additionally, they are expected to maintain a regular visible presence, identifying and addressing problems while working with the RISD community to ensure a safe environment, as well as to develop and maintain positive and effective working relationship with Brown University PD, Providence PD, Providence FD and other outside agencies to ensure quality service to the community.


RISD’s Standards and Training Captain will join a team of 13 officers, 6 sergeants, 5 dispatchers, 4 facility monitors. The position is  part of the command staff including the Operations Captain and reports to the Director of Public Safety.


Essential Functions

  • With a lens of inclusion and in alignment with the College’s initiatives related to social equity and inclusion, develops, identifies, coordinates and monitors in-service training for all public safety staff, reflecting best practices in campus law enforcement and improved performance.  Seeks specific input and advisory from the Operations Captain regarding EMS related training.

  • Develops systems and procedures which meet or exceed IACLEA and/or CALEA, state and national standards, and requirements for agency accreditation, and seeks to obtain and maintain, as well as manages the department’s accreditation processes.

  • Collects and maintains Clery Act documentation and data, ensuring comprehensive and accurate information for the purposes of publishing RISD’s Annual Fire and Safety Report. Researches, recommends, develops and implements appropriate Clery Act training for all staff including Campus Security Authorities.

  • Develops and implements community policing security and safety training for the RISD community. Trains officers to deliver these presentations, monitoring performance to ensure trainings are delivered effectively.

  • Serves as the senior investigating officer, directing and/or investigating criminal violations on campus, assisting Title IX and the Office of Institutional Discrimination as needed. 

  • Conducts department internal affairs and complaint investigations. Ensures proper case management and assignment through ARMS or other databases.

  • Actively engages in performance management related to training for all staff by providing feedback, as requested. Responsible for ensuring staff’s compliance with required education.

  • Ensure consistent enforcement of department policies, procedures, rules and regulations.

  • Actively participates in and contributes to the development of policies, and strategic and long- range planning related to scheduling and program integration that are aligned with best practices related to campus safety and security by making observations and recommendations to the Director of Public Safety and Command Staff.

  • Review documentation and approved incident reports, daily logs and other documents for accuracy and compliance with RI state law, UCR, regulations of the federal Crime Awareness and Campus Security Acts as applicable.

  •  Monitors changes in federal, state and local laws and requirements related to campus safety and reporting requirements.

  • Represent the department and college in matters related to public safety and security in partnership with the Director, establishing mutual respect, understanding and shared communications.

  • Maintains thorough knowledge of the collective bargaining agreements, participating in labor relations negotiations as assigned.

  • In partnership with the Director and other command staff, implement the Department’s community policing program which are designed to foster an inclusive community in line with RISD’s SEI goals.

  • Develops and maintains a working relationship with Brown University PD, Providence PD, Providence FD and other outside agencies to ensure quality service to the community.

  • Operates RISD patrol vehicles and other vehicles as needed to carry out job duties.
