The 2017 Citizens Police Academy (CPA)

University at BuffaloWhile many municipal agencies have a CPA, they are not as popular on college campuses. Based on our experience, we recommend that college and university police and public safety departments actively pursue this type of hugely successful program. There are few programs that build as many great ambassadors for your department.

At UB, participants attend a 9-week session of 3-hour evening classes taught by police personnel. Some of the topics we cover include: New York State Penal Law, Police Patrol Procedures, Traffic and Accident Investigations, Recruitment and Training of Officers, Criminal Investigation Bureau, Crime Scene Investigations, and Family Offenses / Domestic Violence.

University at Buffalo coffee with copUBPD uses a successful Problem Oriented Policing Project to address car break-ins. Each semester UBPD personnel flood the parking lots with vehicle report cards. Owners whose cars "fail" get a follow-up email with safety messages from members of the UBPD. Since implementing this program UBPD has virtually eliminated care break-ins.

Lastly, in 2014 UBPD was featured in a video at the International Association of Chiefs of Police Conference.  This short video provides a great overview of this accredited police department.
