IACLEA Statement: National Community Policing Week

Randy Burba, President

On behalf of the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA), the more than 1,100 college and universities, which comprise our institutional membership, and the approximately 2,500 campus law enforcement staff, criminal justice faculty members, and municipal chiefs of police, we would like to commend President Obama for designating October 2-8, 2016 as National Community Policing Week.

IACLEA shares the goals of building a stronger relationship between law enforcement and the communities they serve. As an integral portion of both local law enforcement and the community, our campus safety officers are uniquely situated as partners to both communities. We have been supportive of efforts to engage law enforcement and organizations like our own in the development of the 21st Century Policing Task Force, the Task Force's Final Report, and most recently its corresponding Implementation Guide. IACLEA supports the six pillars, the recommendations contained within the report, and the supporting guidance to assist in moving from recommendation to action within the implementation guide.

Furthermore, we commend Department of Justice and Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch for calling even more attention to these important issues through the 12-City Community Policing Tour and the over 400 events scheduled around the country this week. These events are designed to foster and continue dialogue, promote cooperation, trust, and respect between all parties, and help citizens and law enforcement officers partner with each other in an effort to advance public safety and strengthen police-community relations.

IACLEA is committed to continuing to work with the Department of Justice and the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Office on the implementation of key recommendations as they pertain to public safety of institutions of higher education both here and abroad.
