2012 Officer Memorial Award
Officer Deriek Crouse, Virginia Tech
On December 8, 2011, Police Officer Deriek W Crouse was performing a routine traffic stop on the Virginia Tech campus. At approximately 12:25 p.m. an individual unrelated to the traffic stop shot and killed Officer Crouse during the course of his duties. The assailant fled the scene and was found a short time later in a campus parking lot deceased from a self inflicted gunshot wound. No motive has been established and there is no connection between Officer Crouse and the shooter. Officer Crouse had been employed by the Virginia Tech Police Department for four years and leaves a wife and five children behind.
